I had a good transition to the bike and started passing competitors on the lookout for those in my age category. It did not take long pass the last one at about mile 5 right before Razor Ridge. It is almost a steady climb up to that point and then you get a nice downhill break before climbing back up to the highest point. The course is not very technical but has some good sustained climbing which is in my favor. Technical would also be in my favor but it is not until the last 5 miles that you get some fun twists and turns and ups and downs so I try to make the most of that section. They added a new section to the bike course making it about a mile longer and getting it up the 20 mile mark. I felt great on the bike all the way to the end and flew into transition ready to run!
The first 3 miles of the run course is brutal. It climbs up steadily with short respites that never last long enough. The run course was also increased in length to 6.5 miles but fortunately the extra length was on a flatter section – if you could call any of that course flat! Race day turned out to be one of the hottest days of the week with no trade winds to cool your working body. I started to feel the heat on the run and knew I needed to take action so I did not bonk. I bring Clif Bloks with me so started eating those and took that extra dose of electrolyte caps that I carry ‘just in case’ at the next aid station. I also grabbed more drinks than I normally do. My body responded and I picked up the pace again. Once on the mostly downhill side of the run course, I got a faster stride going and never let up till the finish line! It feels great to have been able to pull off a great race and with it my 6th World Champion title! I was even able to be 3 min faster than last year on a longer course. #olderbutfaster
I am also so blessed to be able to spend a couple weeks after this race – my last of the season – relaxing at the beach in Maui!
The support I get from my sponsors and family is much appreciated and I really could not do this successfully without them! Thanks to Clif Bar, Rudy Project North America, Magura USA, Sazza Pizza and Circ Toepel.
